Soul Sanctuary was created to heal the souls of individuals at the depth of despair over their addiction to drugs and alcohol. We are a small residential rehab facility located in beautiful Laguna Beach, CA right on the ocean.
Substance abuse and mental health disorders often go hand in hand. Many people will use drugs or alcohol to self-medicate or cope with their mental illness symptoms. At Soul Sanctuary, we use evidence-based practices to help people who struggle with a mental disorder and have developed a substance use disorder (SUD) because of it. Our Laguna Beach dialectical behavior therapy program aims to improve our patients’ quality of life and provide them with healthy and highly effective coping strategies.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is derived from the more commonly known cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). It is used to help people learn how to stay in the moment and not focus on the past or future, develop coping strategies that they can use in a stressful or triggering situation, and give patients tools to regulate emotions and improve relationships with their loved ones.
Originally, DBT was developed for people who had been diagnosed with borderline personality disorder (BPD). However, it can be adapted to treat other mental conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), eating disorders, and substance use disorders. Dialectical behavior therapy has shown great effectiveness in treating those who have developed a co-occurring or borderline personality disorder.
Dr. Marsha Linehan developed dialectical behavior therapy during the late 1980s, along with her colleagues. While working with patients who struggled with BPD, they found that they did not respond and was expected with traditional cognitive-behavioral therapy. They began to experiment with different techniques that were able to meet the patients’ specific needs.
They based their techniques on the philosophy of dialectics, described by Verywellmind as “everything is composed of opposites and that change occurs when there is a “dialogue” between opposing forces.” Academics summarize it as a thesis, antithesis, and syntheses, and through this process have discovered three basic assumptions, these are:
Patients who go through addiction rehab and require DBT specifically often have several issues that need to be addressed. The therapist determines the order of which problems need to be focused on first by using a hierarchy of treatment targets:
Individual counseling gives patients the ability to work one-on-one with a therapist and dive deeper into the underlying issues that are specific to them. By forming a trusting relationship with the therapist, patients will be able to identify negative behaviors and learn new strategies on how to change them.
Group therapy is a positive and effective form of treatment done in a safe environment and led by highly qualified therapists. The therapists can help mediate and guide the discussion when needed but are not meant to lead the discussions. Patients can build a supportive community with others who are going through a similar experience. DBT can heavily influence group therapy sessions, as others can help to point out destructive behaviors.
Phone coaching ensures that patients who leave rehab can still receive help. Once they find a therapist outside of the rehab facility, they can have that support system whenever they need it. This includes calling their therapist whenever they are struggling with temptation or cravings. By doing this, the therapist can guide the client through the decision-making process and help them to make the best decision.
Also known as therapy for therapists, this team focuses on helping DBT therapists when they come across a patient with a problematic or severe disorder. Due to the complex nature of the disorder, it can be hard to treat. By having the support consultation team, the therapist can continue to be motivated and focused on helping their patient.
Each type of therapy has its own kind of structure and goals that need to be accomplished to achieve a successful recovery. For dialectical behavior therapy, these include:
